EL 22 Carbon Brush Kit V3 A

Applicable for:

  • Easy, all models
  • Smart, all models
  • Go, all models

*This kit includes a complete set of carbon brushes used in AVA’s compact universal motors, found in mentioned pressure washers above.

Carbon brushes are wearing components that transfer electrical current to the rotating part of the motor. Replacing worn brushes can extend the life of the motor when done correctly.
Includes 2 matched brushes with leads and terminal connectors.

Note on third-party brushes:
Carbon brushes are standardised components and widely available. However, incorrect fit or material quality can cause poor contact, overheating, or accelerated wear. If using third-party brushes, always check:

  • Dimensions (length, width, depth)
  • Lead length and terminal type
  • Spring tension and mounting compatibility
  • Brush material (graphite/copper blend for high-speed motors)

*Suitable for experienced users who follow safety instructions and perform proper inspection
Brush replacement is not complex, but requires proper cleaning, fitting, and care. If you're confident with basic repairs and follow our guide, this is a safe and cost-effective task.

For machines showing signs of overheating or wear in other components, we recommend the full motor and pump replacement kit.

Typical cause of failure

• Natural wear – brushes are designed to gradually wear out during use
• Dust accumulation inside the motor, reducing cooling and creating arcing
• Excessive use beyond normal home duty cycle (extended daily operation or use in commercial settings)
• Overload from restricted water flow or blocked pump
• Poor ventilation or running machine with clogged air inlets
• Previous motor damage, leading to uneven brush wear

Estimated lifetime:
Typically 100 hours depending on use, motor load and ventilation. Daily or heavy use will reduce lifespan significantly.

What to check before replacing

To ensure brush replacement is sufficient and avoid repeated failure:

  • Inspect the commutator (the copper contact surface): it should be smooth, clean, and free of pitting or heavy scoring
  • Check for burn marks or arcing
  • Ensure the motor shaft spins freely by hand
  • Clean out all carbon dust from inside the motor housing before installing new brushes

Failure symptoms – Part correlation

• Motor starts and cuts out quickly
• Machine has reduced or unstable power
• Sparking or sizzling noises from the motor housing
• Strong burning smell or signs of arcing
• No response from motor (if brushes are completely worn)

New brushes or motors may emit a slight burning smell or even light smoke during the first few minutes of operation. This is normal as the brushes wear into shape ("seating").

Stop the machine immediately if:

  • The smell worsens or is accompanied by loud noise
  • Smoke continues beyond the first few uses
  • The motor becomes hot to the touch or trips the fuse

Installation advice

Always prioritize safety first: Safety instructions – AVA of Norway

Unplug the machine and discharge any residual power by pressing the trigger in a safe direction.

Warranty and Self-Repair – The AVA Way

At AVA, we encourage repair – not throwaway culture. You’re free to open your machine, inspect it, and replace parts yourself without losing your warranty. That’s part of what makes owning an AVA product different.

We offer guides, spare parts and support so that you can keep your machine running for many years to come – whether it’s a simple nozzle, a carbon brush, or a full pump module.

Many parts are designed to be replacable - just like they should be. Visible signs of use or repair are welcomed - they mean the product is being cared for.
